Jaanimili means 'gathering' from the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal people of North Coast NSW. It is also the name given to UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families’ (UnitingCare CYPF) Aboriginal Services and Development Unit.

Formally known as the ATSI working group, Jaanimili was established in early 2011 following the Dreaming as One report recommendations in 2007. It was recognised there was a pressing need to integrate and sustain culturally sensitive and appropriate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services and practices across UnitingCare CYPF, including delivering access to resources and information.

Jaanimili was given the responsibility of implementing these recommendations highlighted in the Dreaming as One report.

Jaanimili offer services in local communities across NSW and the ACT in conjunction with all parts of UnitingCare CYPF to support children, young people and families.

Headed by a Manager and project team, Jaanimili invites membership and participation of all UnitingCare CYPF Aboriginal staff.

The Unit is the foundation for consultation and cultural leadership across the organisation. They lead all Aboriginal business within UnitingCare CYPF through:

• Developing Aboriginal specific and culturally inclusive programs and services
• Providing cultural guidance, expertise and support to all UnitingCare CYPF programs and staff
• Supporting Aboriginal recruitment, retention and progression to leadership roles
• Creating partnership opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agencies and community groups.

Through Jaanimili’s guidance, UnitingCare CYPF has established a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives:

• The Apology Statement to the Stolen Generations displayed in all UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families offices
• The appointment of two Aboriginal identified UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families Board members
• The Aboriginal Service Delivery Principles
• The Indigenous Employment Strategy
• The Aboriginal Terms of Reference
• The implementation of mandatory Cultural Awareness training
• An increase in Aboriginal employees
• An increase of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in management
• Policy and advocacy work
