UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families Chairman Mark Bagster addresses staff at the Strategic Planning conference

UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families' 700 staff came together for the first time since the creation of the Service Group in 2006, to focus on finalising the 2010-2012 Strategic Plan. Staff had been consulted widely over the last 10 months, providing input to the development of the inaugural Service Group Strategic Plan. Consultation was also undertaken with external stakeholders and service users to ensure their views and ideas were included.

During the two day conference, staff were inspired by presentations from speakers Dr John Falzon, who spoke on the story of social inclusion and special overseas guest, Cindy Blackstock's challenge in achieving social justice for Indigenous children in Canada and Australia. Staff also had the opportunity to network with other staff and discuss a variety of topics in both practice and skills workshops.

A highlight of the two days was the voice of our service users. Service users participated in a frank discussion about their experiences with programs from across the Service Group, showcasing their achievements and how UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families had assisted them to improve their situations.

Two Indigenous staff were also proud to launch the Aboriginal Service Delivery Principles on behalf of the Service Group, with all staff demonstrating their commitment to the Principles by waving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
