Anti-Poverty Week 11-17 October

29 Sep 2009

Can you support Anti-Poverty Week 2009 by organising an event to raise awareness of this critical social justice issue? For great ideas about local events, please visit http://www.antipovertyweek.org.au.

Anti-Poverty Week aims to support individuals, organisations and communities in working together to end poverty. Burnside Chief Executive Officer Jane Woodruff will chair the event in NSW together with NSW Council of Social Services Director Alison Peters.

Burnside has been helping disadvantaged children, young people and families since 1911. Jane is concerned that poverty still stops many Australians getting a good start in life.

For many children, young people and families who are part of the Burnside community, making ends meet is a constant struggle. Through both service provision and advocacy, Burnside is working hard to eliminate poverty.

Jane believes that it’s important for the community to be aware that poverty is still a pressing issue for many children, young people and families. United Nations 2005 figures suggest that one in seven Australian children grow up in poverty.

“Burnside has been helping children, young people and families for nearly a hundred years. Over that time, so much has changed about growing up in Australia.

“On the whole, Australians are so much better off. But there are still lots of children and young people missing out - we can do so much better”, Jane said.
