UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families proud to be an Employer of Choice for Women

10 Mar 2010

The Minister for Women, the Hon. Tanya Plibersek has announced that UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families has been named a 2010 Employer of Choice for Women.

This is the second year running that UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families has won the honour and is recognition that the organisation has a strong and real commitment to equal opportunity values and principles.

One of the initiatives that the judging panel highlighted was the Indigenous Employment Strategy that is aiming to recruit 25 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff. This program is run by a female Indigenous Employment Officer and so far 22 of these positions have been filled and 15 of these are female.

Other important achievements include:

·        82 % of staff are women

·        Out of an executive team of 8, 6 of these positions are held by women

·        Paid parental leave has been increased to 14 weeks

·        29 staff have accessed study leave on 35 occasions and 24 of these were women.

Staff are also considered for promotion, transfer or acting roles regardless of their family obligations or if they are pregnant.

UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families Chief Executive Officer Jane Woodruff said, “The EOWA Employer of Choice Award for Women is significant to our organisation, as social justice is a field dominated by women and hence there is much competition to recruit the best staff to support, develop and deliver our programs to disadvantaged children, young people and families in NSW”.

Three staff who are available for interview are:

·        Claerwen Little, Director - Operations Coordinator - who has 4 Operations Directors reporting to her

·        Melanie White, who can talk about how part time work is not an impediment to promotion

·        Leanne Fyfe who began as a volunteer and is now a paid member of staff.
